Toyota’s Liquid Hydrogen Prototype on Track at the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit will host a world premiere on Thursday, June 11 at 12:50 PM, with the on-track demonstration of the Toyota TR LH2 Racing Prototype.
For the first time in public, a competition prototype powered by liquid hydrogen will run on the 13.6 km Sarthe track. The vehicle will be driven by Kazuki Nakajima, a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This demonstration is part of initiatives launched since 2018 by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and MissionH24 to promote the development of hydrogen in motorsport. Several prototypes have already been presented at Le Mans in recent years, notably the LMPH2G, the H24, Alpine’s Alpenglow, and Ligier Bosch’s JS2 RH2.
Hydrogen Takes to the Track
The Thursday session will feature the Toyota TR LH2 Racing Prototype and Alpine’s Alpenglow. While the Toyota uses liquid hydrogen, the Alpenglow operates on a gaseous system. Both vehicles are equipped with combustion engines, giving the public the opportunity to experience the sound characteristics of this technology.
A second demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at 12:45 PM. The Ligier Bosch JS2 RH2 will then join the two other prototypes for a collective presentation of the various hydrogen solutions considered for the future of Endurance racing.
