Seduction Operation for Hydrogen in Competition at Spa
On the occasion of the second round of the FIA WEC, the Belgian circuit becomes the stage for the ambitions of sports hydrogen.
As the prototypes battle it out on the Ardennes slopes, hydrogen makes a massive appearance, both in the pits and in the fan zone. The goal: to prove that this energy can help achieve zero CO2 emissions while preserving the spectacle and performance.
A story being written in Spa since 2018
It is on this very circuit that everything truly began. In 2018, MissionH24, the joint program of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and H24Project, presented its first hydrogen prototype with a refueling and demonstration on track. Since then, the ACO has continued to accelerate on this path, announcing the creation of a Hydrogen category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in WEC.
Many key milestones of the program have taken place at Spa-Francorchamps. The installation of the first mobile gaseous hydrogen station by TotalEnergies, testing of the prototype in the Michelin Le Mans Series, demonstrations of the LMPH2G, H24, and Alpine’s Alpenglow. The Belgian circuit has established itself as a true full-scale laboratory for the hydrogen sector in endurance racing.
Preparing future generations
Alongside technical developments, the ACO and its partners: WEC, MissionH24, Automotive Skills Alliance, Green Skills for H2, and Hydrogen Europe Research, are organizing a forum dedicated to European educators for the third consecutive year. This program combines theoretical courses and practical workshops with sector experts. The goal is clear: to enable education to adopt the fundamentals of hydrogen to better prepare young people for the jobs of tomorrow.
An Hydrogen Village open to fans
Throughout the weekend, the public will be able to discover the Hydrogen Village set up in the fan zone. Demonstrations of hydrogen vehicles will also be organized on track on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday at 12:50, a hydrogen bus will operate on the circuit, illustrating collective mobility with zero CO₂ emissions at the exhaust. The same vehicle will be displayed in the fan zone from Thursday to Saturday, alongside the latest MissionH24 prototype, the H24EVO.
Spa fans will also be able to discover:
- An educational Michelin tire composed of 71% recycled materials, showcasing the manufacturer’s advances in decarbonization;
- The hydrogen solutions presented by Toyota;
- Fun workshops with hydrogen remote-controlled cars from the H2GP program by Horizon Educational;
- The hydrogen training offered by the Technifutur center at the circuit.
The highlight on Saturday at 12:34, just before the start of the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The aggressive-looking Toyota GR Yaris H2 Concept will rev its internal combustion engine. It is powered by hydrogen, and a renowned driver is announced to be behind the wheel.
