Ford Fathom: A Good Cheap Idea to Explore Without Restraint

The Ford Fathom seems tailor-made for America. However, behind this affordable electric pickup lies an interesting platform for us.

Ford has just unveiled the Fathom, a mid-size electric pickup that will hit the American market in the fall of 2027. And even before knowing its definitive range, one figure catches the eye: 28,350 dollars before destination fees for the Standard Range version.

At this price, the Fathom does not play the low-cost electric vehicle card. Ford promises an interior that offers more space for passengers than a Toyota RAV4, along with a bed and a front trunk. A large screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital key, and compatibility with hands-free driving BlueCruise are also announced.

In short, on paper, the proposal seems quite appealing. But not necessarily for us.

Because, no matter how good it is, an electric pickup of this kind has practically no chance of achieving significant volumes in Europe. However, the Fathom presents a major interest this side of the Atlantic: what lies beneath its bodywork.

It indeed inaugurates the new Ford Universal EV Platform, developed from the outset to accommodate multiple body styles. The pickup is thus only the first application of an architecture set to spawn a whole family of vehicles.

And then, the equation changes.

Ford has developed this platform with one obsession: reducing costs. Fewer components, simplified wiring, large structural parts, and a new assembly process should allow for the production of affordable electric vehicles while preserving space and equipment.

Now imagine this same recipe, but stripped of its bed and dressed in a compact or family SUV body. Ford would then have a particularly relevant base for Europe and, above all, a potential weapon against Chinese electric vehicles.

Obviously, 28,350 dollars in the United States does not automatically mean 28,350 euros here. But the most important part lies elsewhere: the Fathom demonstrates that Ford believes it can manufacture a modern electric vehicle for under 30,000 dollars. The pickup will probably remain American; however, its recipe would do well to cross the Atlantic.
