Volkswagen California

The new California will be the first Volkswagen-branded camper van with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive.

The new Volkswagen California follows in the conceptual footsteps of its famous predecessors while retaining their iconic features such as the pop-up roof and a meticulously planned interior. California is an ideal VW minibus for everyday use while being able to quickly transform into a fully-equipped camper van perfect for adventures. This versatility is further enhanced by the new hybrid powertrains.

For the first time, all California models are equipped as standard with sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle. The minibus also features a plug-in hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive for the first time.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers the new California in five versions: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper (with a small kitchenette at the rear), Coast, and Ocean (the latter two equipped with a kitchenette on the driver’s side). All versions feature a retractable roof with a glass panel and large front opening, along with two additional windows on the side walls of the bellows, including insect screens. An awning is available as an option for either the right or left side to protect occupants from rain or sun.

On the technical side, this new California is based on the modular transverse MQB platform, meaning it is built on the long-wheelbase Multivan platform. It measures 5,173 mm in length and 1,941 mm in width excluding mirrors. When the pop-up roof is retracted, it remains 1,990 mm high, similar to its predecessor, allowing access to most urban tunnels and parking garages. Its 3,124 mm wheelbase provides a spacious interior with a headroom of 1,297 mm, which increases to 2,108 mm when the pop-up roof is open.

The new California can be equipped with three different engines, paired with a DSG dual-clutch robotic transmission. The turbo diesel injection (TDI) version produces 110 kW (150 hp). The direct injection turbo gasoline (TSI) engine boasts 150 kW (204 hp), along with equally high torque. Both TDI and TSI engines drive the front axle. But the highlight is the arrival of a new plug-in hybrid powertrain developing 180 kW (245 hp) combined. This plug-in hybrid is paired with a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. With a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg, it becomes the ideal companion for globetrotters, winter campers, and trailer or boat owners.

Orders for the new California will begin in June 2024, with initial deliveries starting in the second half of the year.
