BYD plug-in hybrid France

The Chinese manufacturer BYD took the top spot in the French market for plug-in hybrid vehicles in May 2026.

According to figures provided by BYD, 1,745 vehicles were registered during the period, representing about 22% of segment sales. This performance is primarily based on the launch of two new models equipped with the DM-i plug-in hybrid technology: the ATTO 2 DM-i and SEALION 5 DM-i SUVs. The two vehicles reportedly occupied the first and second places in PHEV sales in France during May.

A strong growth in the French market

Beyond just the segment of plug-in hybrids, BYD indicates that it achieved an overall market share of 2% in France in May, a level presented as unprecedented for the brand in the Hexagon. Since the beginning of the year, total registrations amount to 8,780 units, representing an 81% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

BYD’s growth is based on an offering that includes both 100% electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Over the first five months of the year, the manufacturer claims to have moved from ninth to second place in the French PHEV market.

Developed by BYD since the late 2000s, the DM-i technology combines an internal combustion engine with a rechargeable electric drive. The system notably relies on the Blade battery, developed in-house by the manufacturer.

According to BYD, this architecture aims to prioritize the use of the electric motor during daily commutes while maintaining a high range for long trips. The manufacturer also emphasizes a reduction in fuel consumption compared to conventional internal combustion models.

An expanding hybrid range

In addition to the recent ATTO 2 DM-i and SEALION 5 DM-i, BYD’s plug-in hybrid range also includes the SEAL U DM-i SUV as well as the SEAL 6 DM-i sedan and its station wagon variant, the SEAL 6 DM-i Touring. Since the beginning of the year, the ATTO 2 DM-i has been the most registered model of the brand in France, ahead of the SEAL U DM-i.

BYD also plans to expand its offering with the upcoming launch of the DOLPHIN G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid city car intended mainly for the European market. The model is expected to be marketed in June.

BYD’s progress comes amid strong competition in the European electrified vehicle market. Plug-in hybrids continue to represent a transitional solution for some drivers, particularly those who wish to benefit from daily electric driving while maintaining high autonomy for long journeys.
