BYD: 18 Years to Dominate Plug-in Hybrids
From discreet pioneer to global leader, the Chinese manufacturer BYD continues to accelerate at an impressive speed.
In 2008, at the Geneva Motor Show, an unknown company named BYD surprised everyone with the F3DM, the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle. A technological aberration for European manufacturers who were then swearing by diesel with particulate filters and direct injection! Eighteen years later, the group claims to have produced over 7.7 million PHEVs and holds a global leadership position in this segment, symbolizing a meteoric rise.
BYD’s growth is impressive in its scale. Founded in 1995 with just 20 employees, the company now boasts over one million employees worldwide and operates in 112 countries. Its innovation power is equally notable, with nearly 45 patents filed each day and over 110,000 engineers engaged in research and development.
Range, BYD’s battle horse
On the industrial front, this rise in power translates into rapid diversification and increased production cadence. Where the F3DM offered in 2008 a 16 kWh battery, 60 km of electric range, and about 450 km total on a downhill with a tailwind, current models have moved up a scale. The SEAL 6 DM-i achieves over 1,500 km of combined range, while the SEAL U DM-i easily surpasses the 1,000 km mark.
The new ATTO 2 DM-i, the next compact model, illustrates this maturity: up to 90 km in electric mode, over 1,000 km total, and fast charging from 30 to 80% in just 26 minutes thanks to the Blade battery. This battery, based on LFP chemistry, stands out for its thermal robustness and durability.
Technically, the DM-i system is based on a reverse logic compared to traditional hybrids: the 1.5-liter thermal engine with a record efficiency of 43% primarily acts as a generator, prioritizing electric power for daily use.
