BYD Flash

With its new technologies, BYD may have just removed the last barriers to the massive adoption of electric vehicles.

BYD, the world’s largest manufacturer of new energy vehicles, unveiled the second generation of its Blade battery and the FLASH Charging system during a presentation in China. These technologies finally align the electric vehicle charging experience with that of a traditional fuel fill-up, thanks to a record power of 1,500 kW and performance maintained even at -30 °C.

The FLASH Charger delivers up to 1,500 kW through a single connector (currently only in Chinese market specifications). It allows charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. At -30 °C, a charge from 20% to 97% takes only twelve minutes. The Blade 2.0 gains a 5% increase in energy density, allowing for ranges exceeding 1,000 km according to the CLTC cycle.

BYD at the forefront of technology

This performance is based on the “FlashPass” system, the result of six years of R&D. It incorporates three key innovations in LFP cells:

  • A “Flash-Release” cathode with a multi-level architecture designed for ultra-fast deintercalation,
  • An AI-optimized “Flash-Flow” electrolyte for maximum ionic conductivity,
  • A “Flash-Intercalate” anode with a 3D structure allowing 360° lithium intercalation.

A new ultra-thin and self-healing solid interface layer (SEI), combined with high-throughput electrode geometry, drastically reduces internal resistance. The Blade 2.0 retains its legendary safety: it has successfully passed a FLASH Charging test and a nail penetration test without thermal runaway (even after 500 cycles) and a test simulating the short circuit of four cells (temperature > 700 °C). Capacity degradation is reduced by 2.5% compared to the previous generation.

The charger features a suspended T design with a sliding cable on a rail for a hygienic and effortless connection. Each station integrates a fast-discharge storage system that circumvents network limitations. BYD is already operating 4,239 stations in China as of March 5, 2026, and plans to reach 20,000 units by the end of 2026, with imminent international deployment.
