By claiming to be capable of producing 1000 Cybertrucks per week, Tesla will need 38 years to fulfill its order book.

Is this what the expression “Being a victim of one’s success” refers to? For the past two years, Tesla has boasted about having received 2 million orders for its electric pickup Cybertruck. A cheerful statistic for the Californian manufacturer, but we are not talking about smartphones or cans of Coke here. We are talking about a car that is very complex to assemble due to its technology and cubical body.

However, delivery times have become a source of frustration for customers. After establishing a delivery system based on reservation dates, which was understandable, Tesla has decided to change the rules of the game. To be delivered among the first, one had to increase the invoice and join a launch series at nearly double the price.

The buzz effect has faded and even Elon Musk admits that the Cybertruck was not supposed to be among Tesla’s priorities. But the problem remains: how to honor, and quickly, the hundreds of thousands of orders? Tesla does not communicate on the free cancellations of reservations, and there are many disappointed customers: delays, quality of manufacturing, unfulfilled range, etc.

However, if we stick to the 2 million initial orders, at the current production rate, Tesla therefore needs 38 years to fulfill its reservations. It goes without saying that Tesla is facing a real puzzle: to dramatically increase the production rate or to resign itself to canceling the orders and refunding the customers.

With this parameter in mind, will Tesla truly be motivated now to market the Cybertruck in Europe and Asia? If so, one could deduce a possibility: the Cybertruck has never received 2 million orders. We wouldn’t be surprised by the contrary…
