Fast Charging Stations Boost the Network in January 2023
This page is translated from the original post "Les bornes de recharge rapides dopent le réseau en janvier 2023" in French.

With nearly 3,200 new charging points added in just one month, electric cars are primarily benefiting from numerous very rapid chargers.
Last year, the number of charging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid cars increased significantly (+52%). There were 82,107 charging points in France according to the AVERE-France benchmark.
+14% of fast charging stations in one month!
How does 2023 start? Under the same favorable conditions, with 3,177 new charging points, totaling 85,254. In January 2022, fewer than 800 charging points had appeared, representing a 57% increase in the French public charging network over one year. As a result, France now has 126 charging points per 100,000 inhabitants.

By type of installed station, those very rapid chargers have increased significantly: 560 at a power equal to or greater than 150 kW. Another popular charger delivers from 7.4 to 22 kW in alternating current (AC), with 1,700 points now open.

AC < 7.4 kW | 30,030 |
AC 7.4 to 22 kW | 46,045 |

DC < 50 kW | 1,988 |

A reliability issue?
“2023 will be the year when we reach the symbolic mark of 100,000 public charging points,” predicts Clément Molizon, the general delegate of AVERE-France. An objective set for 2021 by then-Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, and postponed to the end of 2022. “The year is starting well,” continues C. Molizon, “but the momentum must be maintained and increased, with a constant focus on improving service quality and user experience.”
Indeed, in January, only 78% of the very rapid chargers (+150 kW) operated normally. That is too low for a satisfactory experience, especially for owners of longer-range electric cars, who are more demanding. In contrast, the availability rate for fast chargers between 50 and 150 kW is 83%, and 86% for slow chargers.
