Long presented as a simple mobility solution, the electric car could soon become a true source of income for its owners.
Thanks to bidirectional charging, electric vehicles can not only store electricity but also return it when the grid or a building needs it.
The principle is simple: the battery charges when electricity is abundant and inexpensive, especially thanks to renewable energy sources. This energy can then be used to power a home (Vehicle-to-Home), a building (Vehicle-to-Building), or be fed back into the electrical grid for payment (Vehicle-to-Grid).
According to an analysis by the German think tank Agora Energiewende, individuals could generate up to 500 euros in annual income by 2030 thanks to this technology. In some cases, these earnings could even fully offset the cost of the electricity needed to charge the vehicle. Owners equipped with photovoltaic panels would be the primary beneficiaries of this economic model.

Beyond the financial interest for motorists, bidirectional charging could play a major role in the energy transition. By absorbing surplus electricity produced by solar or wind power and then returning it during periods of high demand, vehicles would help stabilize electrical grids while limiting investments in new infrastructure.
The economic potential is significant. A study by the European organization Transport & Environment published in 2024 estimates that Vehicle-to-Grid could save over 100 billion euros in electrical grid-related costs within the European Union between 2030 and 2040. For Germany alone, these savings could reach 8.4 billion euros.
