Electric Charging: Charging Stations Will Have to Display What You Really Pay

A more visible price, actual power displayed, and detailed justification: the government announces new rules to make charging electric cars more transparent by 2027. This will simplify life for drivers.

Filling up without clearly knowing the price? No one would find that normal. Yet, when at a charging station, understanding how much your stop will cost sometimes requires more focus than finding the right exit on the highway. Between the information to look for and the expected performance, simplicity remains a goal to achieve.

The government promises to make progress. Announced on October 15 as part of the second phase of the electrification plan, an “operation transparency” outlines three concrete changes.

First measure: rapid charging stations of over 50 kW must display the charging price in euros per kilowatt-hour. This essential information allows users to compare prices before plugging in their car. A coffee break feels much better when the cost holds no surprises.

The actual power must also be displayed

Second change: these stations must indicate the instantaneous power delivered. Drivers will thus see how quickly their car is actually recovering energy. This is much more relevant data during the session than just the maximum power advertised on the equipment.

Finally, a payment receipt specifying the breakdown of the charging price must be provided for all stations. The goal is simple: to enable everyone to understand what they are being charged.

The announced timeline distinguishes two deadlines: April 2027 for the payment receipt and display in new stations, and November 2027 for display in existing stations.

These announcements must now be translated into texts and on the ground. But their promise meets an obvious expectation: to be able to plug in your car without having to pull out a magnifying glass.
