BYD promises charging in 9 minutes, but under what conditions?
Charge your car almost fully before finishing your coffee: BYD brings this promise to the forefront at the Paris Motor Show. An appealing prospect, but it depends as much on charging stations as on batteries.
Nine minutes. That’s the time announced by BYD to charge the battery of its new ATTO 8 from 10% to 97%. Unveiled at the Auto Show, this seven-seater electric SUV is set to hit European dealerships in the first quarter of 2027. With its 115 kWh battery, it claims up to 653 kilometers of WLTP range. But its true attraction lies on the charging side.
The FLASH Charging technology combines a second-generation Blade battery with a specific charger. BYD explains that it has notably reduced the internal resistance of the cells to speed up charging while limiting heat production. The stations also utilize buffering: a battery gradually accumulates electricity from the grid, then delivers it at high power to the vehicle.
The real challenge will be finding the right charger
Here’s the essential condition: having the right equipment on both sides of the cable. Plugging a current electric car into a high-power charger won’t automatically allow it to regain its range in nine minutes. Conversely, the ATTO 8 will need to encounter suitable infrastructure to maintain this pace.
BYD plans to have 3,000 FLASH Charging stations in Europe by the end of 2027. This is a deployment goal, not a network already available everywhere. The announcement does not detail their distribution in France or charging rates. The claimed performance will also need to be compared to real-world usage conditions.
For drivers, the prospect remains encouraging: breaks dictated by their desires rather than by the battery. But these chargers must also be present along the right routes, accessible, and offered at a reasonable price. The stopwatch is impressive; the map of stations will be just as crucial.
