BYD and Geely Compete for the Fastest
In a frantic race for ultra-fast charging, the challenger Geely has openly challenged the star BYD.
Forget the time when charging your electric car took a full lunch break. In China, the duel between the two giants of electric vehicles, BYD and Geely, now resembles a sprint of elite athletes where every second counts.
A new record on the line
Just a month ago, BYD thought they had secured the match with their second-generation Blade battery and “megawatt” charging, capable of going from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes. But according to figures reported by the specialized media CarNewsChina, Geely has just regained the advantage in a spectacular way.
Thanks to its new 900V Energee Golden Brick battery, the Lynk & Co 10 (premium brand of the Geely group) achieved a performance that borders on science fiction:
- 10% to 70%: 4 minutes and 22 seconds.
- 10% to 97%: 8 minutes and 42 seconds.
For comparison, Geely gains nearly 40 seconds over BYD to reach the 70%. This may seem trivial to you, but it’s a technological chasm at this level of power.
The technology behind the clock
To achieve such speed, Geely didn’t take half measures. During the test, the charging power climbed to 1100 kW. Even more impressively, even when the battery is nearly full (at 80%), it continues to accept over 500 kW, whereas most current models drastically slow down.
However, as CarNewsChina points out, these records only matter because of the charging stations that support them. While Geely uses the ultra-fast chargers from Zeekr (capable of delivering 1300 kW with a complete liquid cooling system), BYD maintains a lead in the field. The Shenzhen giant has already installed 5,000 “megawatt” stations and plans to have 20,000 by the end of the year.
