Highways: Why Some Toll Costs Are Cheaper in a Tesla?

For those interested in the seasonal announcements of increases in highway toll rates, this information will be juicy. Indeed, every year, the companies managing the State’s highway concessions try to convince us that they are minimizing inflation, but the trick is well-known.

To simplify, this increase is an average of all the possible combinations of routes within their sector. For the APRR network alone, there are 296 pages of hypotheses from one destination to another, from one toll to another, from one city to another. From a major to a minor… but especially from a minor to another minor. The route that very few drivers take, but which helps reduce the average increase.

Conversely, the most trafficked routes are those that undergo the highest increases, thus gaining in profitability. The case of the Paris-Lyon route is striking… and allows for substantial savings if you travel in a Tesla in particular.

Obligation to Exit the Highway

For a long time, Tesla refused to pay hefty fees for concessions at highway rest areas to install its Superchargers. The American manufacturer, rightly so, preferred parking lots in close proximity to certain exits, so that its customers wouldn’t waste too much time.

Between Paris and Lyon, the toll sections connect the tolls of Fleury-en-Bière and Villefranche-Limas. The price, if you do not exit the highway, is 40.40 euros. Remember this figure.

If you make the trip with a Tesla Model Y Propulsion, the most popular electric vehicle in the world, the route planner will suggest you exit at Avallon, then connect to Chalon-sur-Saône Centre, and finally Villefranche-Limas and Lyon.

The first section will cost you 16.20 euros. The second 11.40 euros, and the last 11.30 euros. In total, the sum of these three sectors will cost you 38.90 euros. That’s just 1.5 euros less than going straight through, but every little bit counts. Moreover, exiting the highway will also result in a charging cost that will be much cheaper, about 15% less.
