Polestar 4 SUV: Gaining a Trunk, the Model Loses Its Originality

Polestar 4 SUV

With the new Polestar 4 SUV, the Swedish brand addresses the main practical flaw of its flagship model.

Starting September 2, Polestar will expand the range of its most popular model with a Polestar 4 SUV. More spacious, more practical, and with a more generous trunk, it retains the technical foundation of the Coupé while responding to a demand expressed by many customers: greater versatility.

To achieve this, Polestar does make a significant concession. The new SUV abandons the feature that set the model apart: its lack of a rear window. At its launch, this radical choice had sparked much debate. The brand explained at that time that eliminating the rear glass improved aerodynamics, provided more space for rear passengers, and could be advantageously replaced by a digital rearview mirror powered by a camera.

Polestar Faces Harsh Realities

On paper, the idea was appealing. In practice, it has proven more divisive. Some drivers never fully adopted this exclusively digital vision, while others lamented a feeling of confinement aboard. By reintroducing a more conventional architecture to prioritize cargo volume and practicality, Polestar seems to acknowledge that this stylistic boldness also had its limits.

The rest of the technical specifications remain attractive. Based on a 400 V architecture, the Polestar 4 SUV promises up to 630 km of WLTP range in propulsion and up to 544 hp in the dual-motor version. The chassis has also been recalibrated to improve comfort and dynamism.

Manufactured in Busan, South Korea, the Polestar 4 SUV will arrive in most European markets starting in September. More mainstream, more family-friendly, but also much less iconoclastic, it illustrates a common phenomenon in the automotive industry: the boldest ideas sometimes yield to market expectations. It is a pragmatic choice… that nonetheless resembles an admission that the initial bet was not as straightforward as hoped.
