In Paris, Line 14 of the metro bids farewell to its old train sets

On Friday, March 24, 2023, Paris Metro Line 14 retired its 1998 trains to make way for all-new, more modern ones.
Nothing is lost, everything is transformed. This aphorism by Antoine Lavoisier fits perfectly with the decision by RATP (Autonomous Paris Transport Authority) to replace its old automatic trains on Line 14… to better redeploy them on Line 4.
The project revolves around extending Line 14 in 2024, towards Orly Airport on one end, and towards Saint-Denis Pleyel (the site of the future Olympic Village) on the other. Thus, the MP89 trains (for “Pneumatic Equipment 1989”, the date of the initial order), which have been in service since 1998 when this Paris line was inaugurated, are now being replaced by more modern MP14 trains.

35 of these new trains are already in service. This fleet will double by 2024 – coinciding with the Olympics held in this part of Île-de-France – with an additional 37 trains.
Time is pressing to have the extensions of Line 14 ready before the 2024 Olympics. The extension to Orly Airport from Olympiades is 14 kilometers of underground track. Seven new stations and a maintenance site in Morangis will also be created.
Line 14 will then be the “spinal cord” of the Grand Paris Express, says RATP. It will connect Lines 15 to 18 and move one million people per day. The full journey between Orly and Pleyel will then take 40 minutes. Cutting travel time in half… and the ticket price by five compared to today!
