The Alstom MF19 metro, which will gradually replace the currently operating trains in Paris, has won the Industry Janus Award.
The MF19, a new metal metro designed by Île-de-France Mobilités, the RATP, Alstom, and the Avant-Première design agency, recently received the prestigious Janus de l’Industrie label, awarded by the French Institute of Design. This distinction, recognizing since 1953 innovative approaches that place design at the service of users and the environment, rewards here five years of collaborative work.
The MF19 represents a new generation of metros, conceived to address contemporary and future challenges while offering optimal comfort to travelers. Modular, modern, and eco-friendly, it adapts to the specific needs of the metro lines it will serve.

Eight lines operated by the RATP will benefit from these innovative trains, which will replace the previous generations (MF67, MF77, and MF88) starting from the end of 2025, marking a key step in the modernization of the Île-de-France metro network. With an open and bright design, the MF19 promotes internal circulation thanks to its “boa” configuration, which is fully traversable. The modular interior layout offers various waiting zones and incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as USB ports, real-time information screens, and reversible air conditioning.
Moreover, the MF19 has been designed with eco-responsibility in mind: it uses 20% recycled materials, is 98% recyclable at end of life, and consumes 20% less energy thanks to its fully electric braking system and LED lighting. This innovative metro also stands out with a redesigned control cabin that enhances driver comfort and safety, and with technical equipment that facilitates maintenance through advanced digital tools.
Receiving the Janus label, the MF19 exemplifies Île-de-France Mobilités’ commitment to design aimed at improving user experience while addressing environmental and operational challenges. Manufactured in Hauts-de-France by Alstom, it is currently undergoing validation tests, heralding a revolution in urban mobility for the decades ahead.
