Métro parisien

Amazing but true, the Île-de-France public transport operator has just noticed a significant increase in metro ridership in the evenings and on weekends.

All of this might sound amusingly trivial if Île-de-France Mobilités did not specify that their analyses revealed an increase in ridership on weeknights and during the day and evening on weekends, exceeding 20% compared to… 2019. It has taken 6 years for the Île-de-France public transport operator to realize what users have known for much longer: the subway is crowded at these hours! Fortunately, this revelation has been followed by an appropriate response. Valérie Pécresse has asked RATP to increase the transportation supply on the most affected lines, notably lines 5, 9, and 12, starting in the first half of 2025. Better late than never, right?

Finally, more metros?

Since March 8th, line 12 has benefited from a symbolic increase in service during weekends: a reduction of intervals by 15 seconds on Saturday afternoons and 20 seconds on Sundays. Lines 5 and 9, however, still have to wait a few more weeks to see their schedule slightly adjusted. For example, on line 9, the interval will decrease from 4’10 to 3’30 on Saturday afternoons—a “revolution” for those who regularly wait in crowded stations.

But don’t get your hopes up just yet, as this is only the beginning. During weekdays, line 5 will finally see additional trains in the evening… starting October 2025. And what about the other lines? Patience, “in-depth” studies are still underway for lines 2, 3, 7, 8, and 11, with adjustments planned for 2026. It took two years to analyze what millions of users report daily.

As for line 14, it introduces a subtle distinction between busy days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and the others. It’s almost logistical genius! These late measures reflect a fortunate awakening: better late than never, even if the evidence has been clear for a long time to everyone, perhaps except the operator itself.
