TER hybride Alstom Regiolis 2022

Since 2021, Alstom Regiolis hybrid TGVs have been continuing their testing phase before a planned deployment in 4 regions in spring 2023.

Just like in the automotive industry, the energy transition is a major topic in the 2020s. While electric trams or hydrogen-powered trains are underway, lines that are not yet electrified are exploring hybrid options.

Hybrid TGVs Inspired by Cars

In 2021, Alstom began testing its bi-mode Régiolis. Built in Reichshoffen (Bas-Rhin), it was tested before running on the Vélim loop (Czech Republic). These hybrid trains operate exactly like a hybrid car, such as a Toyota Yaris. They mainly run on a thermal engine, here diesel, but also have an electric component.

The train recharges through braking and deceleration, converting energy into electricity in the batteries, which replace half of the thermal engines. These batteries supply power to the electric traction system, which is preferable in urban areas and at stations.

Successful Tests

Over 8 months of operation, the hybrid TGV tests were “conclusive” reports Alstom, where “the train behaved according to expectations”. The company specifies that the energy recovery rate “reaches a high level, over 90%”. This is essential for saving energy, with reductions of up to 20%, without external recharging of the batteries.

The electric range is also well known, approximately 20 kilometers. The dual traction does not reduce the train’s endurance, which can cover 1,000 kilometers before refueling.

First Official Trains in 2023

Alstom still has some testing batteries to complete before receiving operational authorization from the Public Railway Safety Authority. Meanwhile, SNCF Voyageurs highlights that it’s preparing the train operation plan and training staff.

The experimental commercial service will then begin in spring 2023 across 4 partner regions: Occitanie, Grand-Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and Centre-Val de Loire. It will only be after 2024 that SNCF plans “industrial deployment” on a national scale.

Finally, Carole Desnost, Director of Technologies, Innovation, and Group Projects at SNCF, recalls her intention to “offer regions other alternatives to diesel by 2024-2025”. “We are also working on other solutions,” she explains, “such as hydrogen and battery trains, as well as partial line electrification.”
