Ferrari Hypersail: 800 volts and a Luce rear to soar above the oceans
With its sailboat Hypersail, Ferrari combines renewable energy, muscular effort, and electrohydraulic control to aim for energy autonomy in ocean races.
Ferrari sets sail with a challenge: to make a 100-foot monohull, or about 30 meters, fly while generating the necessary energy for its onboard systems. Hypersail thus transposes the electrical expertise and automotive validation methods to oceanic constraints.
Its architecture is based on four voltage levels, from 12 to 800 volts, and distinguishes between sail maneuvers and the piloting of appendages.

On the deck, the Winch-by-Wire decouples human effort from mechanical transmission. Crew members drive electric machines derived from the active suspensions of the Purosangue and F80, used as generators. The electricity produced instantly powers the winches or a hydraulic pump dedicated to adjustments.

This system allows for a regular winching cadence, favorable to electromechanical efficiency and muscular effectiveness. Ferrari announces that a crew member can handle loads of up to nine tons, without specifying the corresponding execution speed.
Below the deck, the Flight Control separates two categories of movements. The adjustments of the foil arms and the swinging keel utilize a motorization derived from the 800-volt rear electric axle of the Ferrari Luce. Quick and continuous corrections of the hydrodynamic flaps use two pumps driven by 48-volt motors. This distribution adapts power to demands and contributes to redundancy.

Two identical 800-volt batteries store excess energy and absorb demand variations. The supply relies on 100 square meters of photovoltaic panels integrated into the deck and sides, complemented by removable rear wind turbines.
The solar installation prioritizes efficiency per kilogram on board. The wind turbines impose a trade-off between production and aerodynamic drag. It remains to determine the battery capacity and energy balance to assess the claimed autonomy.
