Candela will use Polestar batteries for its boats

The beginning of a partnership that may be expanded later.
Polestar has just signed an agreement with Candela, a company known for its futuristic electric boats. The automaker will supply batteries and charging systems to its new partner.
Although it is owned by a Chinese automotive group, the Polestar brand is based in Sweden, like Candela. This geographical proximity may have facilitated the rapprochement between the two companies, which plan to later expand their collaboration into other areas.
The agreement is nevertheless surprising, as Polestar’s batteries are actually manufactured by suppliers LG Chem and CATL. Will the automaker therefore provide batteries that it purchased from a third party?
“Polestar is a dream partner for us”, enthused Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela. “While electric cars have made much progress in recent years, the maritime sector has fallen behind. By combining our hydrofoil technology with Polestar’s high-capacity batteries, we can jointly accelerate the adoption of electric boats by the mass market.”.
Candela, boats that fly over the water
Like Polestar, Candela is betting everything on electric propulsion. Its boats are equipped with foils, small underwater wings that keep the hull a few centimeters above the water. This technology would significantly reduce consumption (up to 80% energy savings at high speed according to Candela). A boat with foils is also quieter and produces less wake behind it.
The latest model from Candela, the C-8, offers a range of 50 nautical miles at 22 knots and can reach a speed of 30 knots. It is intended to be distributed on a larger scale than its predecessor, which was produced in 32 units.
