MA? Camion Electrique

MAN Truck & Bus has officially launched the series production of its electric trucks at its Munich plant.

This strategic shift comes for MAN after more than a century of manufacturing diesel engine vehicles. The German manufacturer’s main plant in Munich thus becomes the first site to assemble both thermal and electric trucks on the same production line.

This mixed production capability is one of the strong points of the industrial setup established. It allows the company to adjust its manufacturing based on demand, with a pace that can reach 100 trucks per day. The process required significant transformations, particularly on the assembly line, logistics, and training over 5,000 employees in high-voltage technologies.

MAN has invested nearly 400 million euros in research and development to offer a range of electric trucks ranging from 12 to 50 tons (46 tons for the French market). This offering covers a wide range of applications, from waste collection to long distances. The vehicles are equipped with modular batteries from the Nuremberg plant, with a capacity of up to 534 kWh, and potentially 740 km of autonomy with an additional pack.

Already Well-Filled Order Books

Even before this launch, nearly 200 electric trucks had been produced in pre-series and tested under real conditions over more than two million kilometers. These trials have optimized performance, notably an average consumption of 97 kWh/100 km. Approximately 700 firm orders have already been recorded.

The adoption of this technology aims to meet European objectives for reducing CO₂ emissions. MAN estimates that 1,000 electric trucks could prevent up to 80,000 tons of CO₂ per year, provided that renewable electricity is used. This electrification is an essential lever, especially since over 95% of the group’s emissions are related to the use of its vehicles.

At the same time, MAN continues its efforts in the electric bus sector, which is already in production in Poland and operating in several European cities. This industrial momentum is supported by one billion euros of investment over the decade, a significant portion of which is directed to its German sites.
