Tesla Semi: the electric truck opens for pre-orders
This page is translated from the original post "Tesla Semi : le camion électrique entre en précommandes" in French.

Promised for 5 years, the Tesla Semi electric truck is approaching production and finally opening its first pre-orders.
Even the most ardent Tesla supporters must admit, the manufacturer has been accruing delays: Cybertruck, autonomous driving, Roadster, and Semi. This electric truck, unveiled in 2017, has yet to deliver a single unit, but could 2022 be the year?
Pre-orders to Wait
The American brand is trying to reassure early interested customers by opening pre-orders in North America. This is seen as proof of the imminent Tesla Semi. Elon Musk’s company is accepting reservations for one unit. A first deposit of 5,000 dollars (4,710 euros) is required, followed by a second of 15,000 dollars (14,140 euros) within 10 days. This reservation can be canceled at any time with a full refund, and does not constitute a firm order.

Since 2017, the style and features have remained unchanged. The electric truck has not updated its offer to include two battery sizes—of the 4680 type, like the Cybertruck—offering 480 and 800 kilometers of range. The Semi has four rear-wheel motors, reaches 100 km/h in 20 seconds, and consumes only 124 kWh/100 km.
The semi-automatic “Autopilot” driving feature is also part of the Tesla Semi’s package. The cabin includes two large side screens that also serve as digital mirrors.

Actual Launch of the Tesla Semi in 2023?
To recharge this truck, it requires a proper charging station. Like the previous era for its Model S, Tesla has designed specific chargers, called Megachargers here. With a power output exceeding 1 MW, they are ten times more powerful than the 100 kW chargers needed for a Peugeot e-208.
Produced at Giga Texas factory in Austin (USA), the Tesla Semi is expected to deliver its first units at best by the end of the year, or possibly in 2023. Among the first clients, Pepsi is prioritized and has already received some trucks, initially as a beta tester.
The estimated base price is $150,000 (€141,400) and $180,000 (€170,000) for the long-range version. In operational costs, Elon Musk announced a reduction of 45%, meaning less than 50 cents per kilometer.
