The Swedish truck manufacturer is speeding up on electric with its new semi-trailer competing with the Tesla Semi and Mercedes Actros e600.

The decarbonization of the road transport sector, which is predominantly diesel today, has begun. Solutions will multiply very quickly now, as all market leaders are developing their offerings. Tesla, Mercedes, Volvo, long-distance electric transportation is no longer a pipe dream.

Scania was already active in the decarbonized truck sector, notably with models for public works: concrete mixers and dump trucks for hauling rubble. Today, the Swedish manufacturer benefits from a new battery solution, produced by Northvolt, to present a semi-trailer that is even more efficient.

Two power levels will be produced: 400 or 450 kW, equivalent to 544 and 611 horsepower, respectively. According to Scania, these values are more than sufficient to meet a wide variety of daily rotation needs or medium-range trips.

Pulling capacity increases, thanks to electric power and a peak torque of 2200 Nm, up to 64 tons. For a conventional load of about 29 tons, consumption is around 1.3 kWh/km and the range is estimated at 350 km, which equals about 3.5 hours of continuous driving. Charging capacity reaches 375 kW to shorten legal stops and recover 270 km of range in one hour. On a “low power” outlet of 130 kW, one hour allows regaining 100 km of range. The lifetime of the batteries, with a net capacity reaching up to 468 kWh, is expected to last for 1.5 million kilometers.

According to Scania, this new truck would meet 90% of transportation needs in Europe, with only long-haul routes being more efficient in diesel within its range. The Scandinavian company estimates that most of its customers travel less than 200 km daily in urban circuits, so range is no longer a blocking issue.

Scania aims for 50% of its sales in Europe to be electric by 2030, saving millions of tons of CO2 in the process. Moreover, the field will be open if Tesla is not allowed to operate its trucks in Europe
