Waymo’s autonomous taxis are at the gates of Paris!

Waymo is preparing to arrive in Madrid, with its first passengers expected in 2027. Driverless cars are getting closer to France.

We will still have to wait to traverse Paris in a driverless taxi. But the scenario is becoming a little less distant. Waymo announces it is preparing to establish itself in the Madrid region. The subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, aims to welcome its first customers in 2027. After the United States, European streets are becoming a very real terrain for robotaxis.

However, there is no question of immediately releasing cars left to themselves in Madrid’s traffic. Waymo’s electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles are set to appear in the coming days, initially driven manually. Then there will be a phase of technical validation, with local specialists trained in autonomous driving behind the wheel. The goal: to adapt the system to the specific features of traffic and roads in the region.

Waymo Makes Progress

The commercial launch remains an ambition, not a guarantee. Waymo indicates that it is working with national, regional, and local authorities, preparing emergency services for its technology, and investing in the means necessary for operation.

Nevertheless, the company is moving forward with a certain track record: over 20 million trips completed and several hundred thousand commercial rides each week. It also claims that, over more than 400 million kilometers traveled in full autonomy, it has experienced 95% fewer serious or fatal accidents than human drivers in its operating cities. A figure to be attributed to the manufacturer, whose scope does not prejudge the results in Spain, and these will be interesting on many levels. Traffic in European metropolises is, in fact, quite different from that of major American cities.
