Alpine F1 Now Runs on Bio Diesel!

No, Alpine has not decided to install a diesel engine under the hood of its A526! However, its trucks will now run on HVO.

Even in a discipline accustomed to rule changes, an Alpine F1 Diesel would be a bit of an heresy rather than a revolution. Rest assured: the engine of the Alpine A526 is not affected. It is behind the scenes that BWT Alpine Formula One Team has chosen to fuel its fleet with “Bio Diesel.”

The French team is indeed announcing the use of HVOlution, the HVO fuel marketed by Enilive, for its logistics vehicles during the European rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship. In other words, the heavy trucks that transport cars, parts, and equipment from one circuit to another will gradually phase out traditional diesel.

From frying oil to the paddocks

HVO, or “Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil,” is a renewable diesel obtained through hydro-treatment. Enilive’s HVO is produced in the Italian biorefineries of Venice and Gela, primarily from waste and residues, including used cooking oils and animal fats.

Its main advantage is that it is a so-called “drop-in” fuel: it can replace conventional diesel in compatible vehicles without requiring any engine modifications or distribution infrastructure changes. Enilive claims that its HVO will achieve an average reduction of 79.5% in CO₂ equivalent emissions across the entire value chain by 2025, compared to the reference fossil mix.

Alpine will also be able to rely on over 1,700 Enilive stations offering HVOlution in Europe. The goal is to convert the team’s logistics fleet to the exclusive use of this fuel in the coming weeks.

Even Flavio Briatore has shared his little eco-friendly thought. The exuberant Italian manager, executive advisor of the Alpine team, sees this initiative as “an important new step” in its relationship with Eni. “What started as a strong partnership around energy and fuel-related technologies is taking on an increasingly strategic dimension,” he emphasizes, before assuring that the team wants to strengthen these ties “both on and off the track.”

The agreement indeed extends the partnership established between Eni and Alpine F1, which also focuses on the development of future biofuels for motorsport. For now, therefore, no diesel in the A526. But to get the F1 cars to the circuit, recycled frying oil now has a say.
