Lidl reduces charging to €0.18/kWh: how to take advantage of this low price

Charging an electric car for just a few euros: Lidl offers a rate of €0.18/kWh on its alternating current charging stations, provided you use Lidl Plus.

Lidl applies its discount retailer strategy to electric cars. On its official page dedicated to charging with Lidl Plus, the chain now displays a promotional rate of €0.18/kWh for alternating current (AC), compared to the usual €0.29. This represents a reduction of nearly 38%, which can ease the budget for drivers without a home charging station.

Specifically, a session of 20 kWh charged costs €3.60. For 50 kWh delivered by the station, expect to pay €9, instead of €14.50 at the regular rate. However, be careful to distinguish between the energy billed and what is actually stored in the battery, due to charging losses.

A low price, but not a fast charge

The €0.18/kWh rate applies to AC charging stations, which can provide up to 22 kW of power. However, the actual rate depends on the onboard charger of the vehicle. A model limited to 11 kW will not be able to utilize the full available power. Therefore, stopping by the supermarket will primarily allow for recovering some range, without necessarily fully charging the battery.

To charge more quickly, Lidl also offers a discount on its direct current (DC) stations: €0.29/kWh instead of €0.39, which is about 26% less.

Lidl Plus required, limited-time offer

These preferential prices are available through the Lidl Plus app, which allows users to locate available charging stations, start a session, and track billing. A pre-authorization of €25 for AC or €40 for DC is required.

Lidl mentions a “limited-time offer,” but does not specify its end date on this page. Therefore, it’s best to check the displayed rate in the app before each charging session.
