Two turns of this wind turbine are enough to recharge a Tesla

China is about to put into operation the most powerful wind turbine in the world with astonishing dimensions and energy production.
It’s hard to imagine the scale, as the models lining our highways are tiny in comparison. Named 16M, the turbine — which, unfortunately, won’t be the largest for long — has blades 110 meters long, larger than a football field. The total diameter, with the rotor at the center, reaches 252 meters. That’s twice the width of the Eiffel Tower and, including the mast, the final height will be 275 meters, the equivalent of the Eiffel Tower’s 3rd floor. The swept air area will be 50,000 m²!
The technological feat is courtesy of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Such dimensions conceal an electric plant that, again beyond comprehension, is capable of producing 34.2 kWh with each rotation of the three blades. Just two rotations are enough to recharge an approximate Tesla Model Y with around 70 kWh of gross capacity.
China has invested 800 million dollars in creating a wind farm equipped with several of these gigantic turbines, each capable of producing 66 GWh per year. Enough to power 80,000 homes! For comparison, a nuclear reactor in France provides electricity for about 400,000 homes.
Once the entire park is operational in a few years, China estimates its coal consumption reduction to be around 500,000 tons annually. The country still aims for carbon neutrality by 2060, and sending such a message is very powerful.
With the massive electrification of the automotive fleet, all countries undergoing this paradigm shift will need to boost their energy production.
