Vello Sub: a new very lightweight cargo submarine

Specialist in folding bikes, Austrian Vello is venturing into the cargo market with a longtail model, the Sub, weighing only 24 kg.

The brand has been running for a few years, but gained particular attention this summer with its new folding bike. The Vello+ is the lightest in its category, weighing just 6.5 kg thanks to titanium, and under 10 kg in electric version.

Only 24 to 28 kg

Not resting on its laurels, the company developed its first cargo bike. It is an elongated, or longtail, type—quite different from its original products. Although it retains small 20-inch wheels, it weighs less than other market offerings.

The Vello Sub claims only 24 kilograms for the titanium frame version and 28 kg for the basic model. Its compact size does not compromise practicality, as it is suitable for people between 1.50 m and 2 meters tall.

Despite its size and lightweight build, the Vello Sub does not skimp on features. It is equipped with a powerful Bosch Cargo line motor, 85 Nm. This is necessary to carry a maximum load of 210 kg. The rear cargo area can accommodate 2 children, either on cushions or seats, via the MIK-HD attachment rack. The transmission options include a Gates CDX belt, with a single gear ratio, or multiple speeds via an Enviolo variator.

Up to 250 km range? Yes, but…

The brand trusts Magura brakes, with their discs and 4-piston calipers. The company claims a range of up to 250 kilometers, but only with a second battery and in Eco mode. The standard battery is a Bosch 400 Wh, with an optional 545 Wh, providing 100 to 125 km in Eco mode.

Originally designed to be flexible, the Vello bike maintains this aspect in its cargo version. The Sub features a 90-degree pivoting handlebar, allowing it to reduce width to just 29 cm for easier storage. This cargo bike also features connectivity via its eBike Flow app, turning the phone into a display. The app also collects data and GPS tracking, while the stem includes wireless charging.

From €3,000 via crowdfunding

For its launch, the Vello Sub is available on IndieGogo. Only available through this crowdfunding platform, it starts at half price, at €3,577 (originally €7,153). At this price, it is the basic non-titanium model with a 400 Wh battery and a single gear speed.

No child seat or baskets included, as they are optional accessories listed on Vello’s website. To access the Enviolo transmission, the price rises to €3,577, and €3,832 for the Titanium model (or €4,343 with Enviolo).
