Decathlon’s Btwin Velocargo R500E Arrives at Last

We had been expecting it for summer, but the new version of Decathlon’s Longtail has been delayed, bringing its updates and new colors.

Decathlon’s family cargo bike is more than just an evolution of its renowned predecessor, the R500. Firstly, the new kickstand is finally bolted on instead of screwed on all models. Another major update is the battery management system (BMS for insiders), which no longer caps the power at 40% charge. This was a weak point, according to Frédéric Jung, Btwin product manager. The R500E thus retains its most powerful mode regardless of battery level—boasting a capacity of 672 Wh—but logically loses a few kilometers in range. The charger remains the same, allowing a full charge in less than 5 hours. Decathlon claims a faster charger exists, but these high-current chargers are too expensive, and that is not the brand’s approach.

The front basket also sees improvements—it is now wider and longer, capable of holding larger objects. However, it remains rated for 10 kg, no more. At the back, the wood of the seat and footrests is varnished to prevent degradation, but must be treated regularly. Btwin is also transferring the rear wheel lock, which is less practical with children or luggage, to the front wheel, and a small plastic cover helps absorb chain noise at the tensioner.

Decathlon’s cargo bike finds colors, but at what cost?

Finally, the Decathlon R500E will have new colors each year. It already offers two standard colors: beige and green, replacing the light blue of the launch, as well as a limited edition red. Btwin explains this as a desire to prevent customers from ending up in traffic or leaving school with the same color as their neighbors.

Bad news, all these updates come with a price increase—bringing it to €2,999 flat. It’s expensive, but still very affordable compared to competitors.
