Top 20 Plug-In Hybrid Cars of 2022: Peugeot King of Charging

In France last year, plug-in hybrid car sales declined, primarily benefiting Peugeot, as well as Citroën, DS, and the South Koreans Hyundai-Kia.

The energy transition largely favored 100% electric cars in 2022. In France, their sales jumped by another 25%, exceeding 200,000 units and accounting for 13% of the market. For plug-in hybrids, it’s a different story. Shunned last year, they declined by 10% to 126,549 units, dropping to 8.3% of the automotive market.

Stellantis and Hyundai dominate plug-in hybrids

Once again, the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid leads sales of plug-in hybrid cars in France. In 2022, the Sochalian SUV sold 10,729 units with this powertrain. It thus represents 30% of the total 36,281 sales across all engine types.

Another lion takes second place, but it’s a newcomer. The Peugeot 308 Hybrid enters the rankings with 6,655 registrations, just ahead of the Citroën C5 Aircross. This model, also a cousin of the 3008, is followed in fifth position by the DS 7 E-Tense. Between the two, the Hyundai Tucson plug-in hybrid approaches 5,000 units in the Top 5, with its Kia Sportage equivalent just below 4,000 in sixth place.

Further down, higher-end models are represented. The Mercedes GLA outsells the BMW X3, the Mini Countryman, and the Mercedes GLC, which is tenth but could rank second if its Coupé version is included. Notably, Chinese cars are breaking into the Top 20, with Lynk & Co 01 in twelfth place with over 3,000 units and the MG EHS with 2,415 sales. These vehicles are also exclusively available as plug-in hybrids.
