Mercedes-Benz GLE 2023: The SUV Becomes Even More Electric

The Mercedes GLE is undergoing a facelift. The program includes hybrid petrol and diesel engines with increased electric range.

Produced since 2018 and based on the MHA platform, the Mercedes GLE, available in two body styles: standard SUV and coupe SUV, is set for a facelift this summer. The highlights include accelerated electrification to better meet current environmental standards and to reduce CO2 emissions, which are very penalizing for these high-end models. Compared to the current range, the 2023 version drops the 400d thermal engine and the 400 mild hybrid, aiming to electrify the entire lineup.

The Mercedes GLE gains a 300d version with micro-hybridization, producing no less than 269 hp and benefiting from the famous Boost mode adding 20 hp thanks to its 48-volt system. The torque is very generous, reaching 550 Nm at 1,800 rpm, while fuel consumption in mixed cycle is set at 9.5 liters per 100 km for the base model without options. However, in France, it will incur a minimum penalty of 9,103 euros…

Above that, and only available in Coupe, is the 450 d version, with 367 hp plus the 20 hp Boost. Here, torque is truck-like, at 750 Nm from 1,350 rpm. The mixed cycle consumption is 7.6 liters per 100 km, and the penalty rises to 21,171 euros.

The Plug-in Hybrid in Strong Mode

If you want to avoid the penalty, the solution is the plug-in hybrid, with a version of the Mercedes GLE called 350 PHEV developing 245 hp and capable of about 89 km of pure electric driving. If you oppose diesel, another PHEV version named 400 e provides 280 hp and can run about 92 km in 100% electric mode.

This fourth-generation PHEV technology uses a synchronous motor with permanent excitation, with electrical power up to 100 kW and torque up to 440 Nm. An interesting detail is that all Mercedes GLE and GLE Coupe versions are equipped with all-wheel drive, and PHEV models have a specific Off Road mode that allows off-road driving in 100% electric mode. Fans of the previous Val d’Isère Show will be pleased!

For charging, the Mercedes GLE includes an 11 kW charger but can also benefit from fast charging at 60 kW!

For the more sporty (but also wealthier) buyers, there is also a Mercedes GLE AMG 53 version with 435 hp, which includes a 22 hp Boost and a torque of 560 Nm. Even the formidable 63 S AMG variant features mild hybrid technology, with a total power of 612 hp.

Minor Aesthetic Updates

Visually, the updates to the GLE and GLE Coupe are quite subtle. New light signature, revamped grille and bumpers… that’s about it. The interior features a new steering wheel with capacitive controls, while the multimedia interface has been upgraded with new software offering better responsiveness and voice command understanding. The GLE also benefits from “Over the Air” updates directly via the car’s integrated internet connection.

Among the new features are an itinerary planner for trailer owners, as well as improvements to lane keeping assistance and parking aids.

The prices for the Mercedes GLE and GLE Coupe are not known at this time.
