Rivian: The Anti-Tesla That Is Taking Off!

Rivian R2

Finally revealed after a long wait and careful teasing, the Rivian R2 is the ultimate anti-Tesla Model Y.

The Rivian R2 is finally unveiled, expanding the manufacturer’s lineup to three distinct models alongside the big R1T and R1S. It is a five-seater SUV with an entry-level price announced by Rivian around $45,000. This price remains to be adjusted in euros, as the manufacturer is finally considering entering the European market. However, don’t expect miracles upon conversion. It’s very expensive to carve out a niche, so what are the strengths of this attractive American beast?

It is aimed at competing with the pillars of a very crowded segment currently dominated by the unchallenged Queen, Tesla Model Y. So how to stand out? Perhaps with a small touch of off-road adventure, entirely unnecessary in the city but always quite charming. A boxy, rugged look that is the complete opposite of Tesla’s sleek lines.

Raw and Friendly

The design is visually very robust, with angular lines, making it look like a compact R1S. At a time when manufacturers struggle to create a strong brand identity, this is simple and remarkably effective. The R2 retains the iconic large light bar and vertical oval headlights at the front. Inessential, yet essential, its bumper incorporates a pair of prominent towing hooks. The front trunk, or Frunk, is spacious and located under the hood like other Rivian models. Retractable door handles, sculpted bodywork, and a flat roof complete the adventurous look. At the back, a wide light bar, a small R2 badge in the corner, and that’s all.

The interior matches this vibe, featuring only a large infotainment touchscreen for entertainment. The driver is not forgotten, with a nice display behind the multifunction steering wheel. An intelligent choice, especially as more voices are raising concerns over the disappearance of physical controls, particularly among… Tesla’s target audience! The front seats can fold down for a quick nap. Everything about it screams a fun car to live with.

Motorization and Custom Pricing

There will be three different versions available. A single-motor rear-wheel-drive, and two dual and tri-motor variants (one motor at the front, two motors at the rear). Two battery sizes will be offered, and Rivian claims the largest will have a range of over 480 km and will come with a NACS port. This might be a bit weak to compete with Tesla… For those in a hurry, the tri-motor version will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.0 seconds.

Reservations are already open in the United States on Rivian’s website with a refundable deposit of $100. First deliveries are expected in the first half of 2026. The two- and three-motor versions will likely be quite expensive, but Rivian promises not to break the bank. We will judge based on pricing.
