Volvo commits to a very logical decision
The Sino-Swedish automaker Volvo, in the interest of commercial clarity, has just decided to standardize the names of its electric lineups.
As part of its commitment to become an all-electric manufacturer by 2030, Volvo is unifying and simplifying the naming conventions of its electric models. Thus, the electric models XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge become respectively EX40 and EC40, aligning with the other electric vehicles of the brand, such as the EX30, the EX90, and the EM901. The name XC40 remains assigned to the mild hybrid versions.
More logical now?
This initiative highlights Volvo Cars’ ambition to transition entirely to electric vehicles. In 2023, electric vehicle sales accounted for 16% of total global sales, marking a 70% increase compared to the previous year. With the introduction of the EX30, the EX90, and the EM90 on the market this year, the lineup will include five electric models, with more new releases in the pipeline.

The change also includes the removal of the Recharge label for plug-in hybrids, which are now identified by the suffixes T6 or T8, indicating their power.
The new naming convention for models makes it easier for consumers, whether new or loyal to Volvo, to distinguish between electric and hybrid vehicles.
Björn Annwall, Volvo Cars’ CCO and Deputy CEO, states that this harmonization of electric models with the rest of the lineup simplifies choices for consumers while continuing Volvo’s electrification efforts and updating its hybrids.
Additionally, Volvo is launching the Twin Performance version, increasing power by 25 kW for better acceleration, and introducing a Performance driving mode for an optimal experience at 325 kW (442 hp).

The brand is also working on optimizing its micro-hybrid models, including the XC60 and XC90 with B5 petrol engines, which will benefit from an improved combustion cycle, reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
Finally, Volvo Cars announces a special Black Edition for the EX40, EC40, and XC40 models, following the success of the one for the XC60. These special editions are distinguished by their Onyx black finish and premium interior.
One electric Volvo with a bonus?
The EC40, EX40, and XC40 models continue to offer advanced features, such as Google integration and smart storage solutions, with electric models reaching up to 576 km of range.
The new Volvo EX40 is now available to order and eligible for eco-friendly bonuses as it is produced in Europe. Its price starts at €46,950 for the Single Essential model with 238 hp, eligible for the eco bonus, offering up to 479 km of range and a fast charging capacity of 180 kW. The Volvo EC40 will be available in the coming months.
