IKEA is strengthening its decarbonization initiatives in Italy with the launch of an entirely electric heavy road transport project. Developed in partnership with LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks, this project aims to reduce the environmental footprint of logistics operations and to experiment with sustainable solutions for long-distance transport.
The program will begin in October 2026 with two electric battery trucks (BEV) already in service and plans to expand the fleet to more than ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 by the third quarter of 2026. These vehicles will ensure daily transportation of containers between the ports of Genoa and La Spezia and the distribution center in Piacenza, as well as deliveries to stores in northern Italy.
A Growing Awareness?
Once fully operational, the fleet could travel over 1.2 million kilometers per year without CO₂ emissions, thus helping to limit the climate impact of road transport. The initiative also helps to reduce urban noise, a benefit for night deliveries and the quality of life of local communities.
According to Ewelina Taylor, global transport manager at Inter IKEA Group, this project is part of a broader approach to limiting emissions in heavy transport.
