Will we soon see autonomous charging stations moving through our cities?

While Stellantis tests inductive charging in Italy, EV Safe Charge explores another avenue to make life easier for electric vehicle users: the “on-demand” charging station.

Based in Los Angeles, this company specializes in creating charging solutions. With ZiGGY, they have developed a new type of station that moves autonomously to the car to be charged.

A station that patiently waits for you in a parking spot

ZiGGY is controlled via an app. Once the user places an order, the station moves to the selected parking spot and positions itself. When the driver arrives, the station frees the space and, after the vehicle is parked, positions itself right next to it. The customer simply unlocks it and plugs in their car. They will then receive a notification indicating that the charging is complete. After finishing its task, ZiGGY either moves to a new spot or recharges itself on a dedicated station.

In addition to providing information to customers, the two screens on either side of the station display advertisements. Parking operators can thus generate additional revenue.

To promote its innovation, EV Safe Charge focuses on two main points: a lower cost compared to a fixed station and a quicker installation. The company also points out that it has worked with major automotive brands to establish credibility. Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, or the Stellantis group are said to have already placed their trust in it.

EV Safe Charge accepts reservations and plans to supply its first ZiGGY stations in 2023. In the United States, several hotels have already expressed interest.
