Peugeot 408: The Hybrid SUV Targets the Arkana

Peugeot is entering the coupe-SUV market as well. The new 408 abandons diesel but offers two plug-in hybrid options.

Similar to the Citroën C5X, the new 408 wavers between the look of a sedan and that of an SUV. Its tall stance might have been shocking a few years ago, but tastes and trends have since changed significantly. The coupe-SUV formula is now favored by many drivers, and many manufacturers have adopted it. Renault offers, for example, the Arkana, which will be a main competitor of the 408 in France.

A 408 Larger Than the 3008

Positioned in the C segment, the new 408 measures 4.69 meters in length, which is 24 cm longer than the 3008. The steeply raked tailgate adds a dynamic touch to the profile. The numerous body lines bring the vehicle closer to certain Japanese models. The painted grille—an accessory once exclusive to Peugeot 100% electric models—integrates smoothly into the front end. The headlights extend into a luminous claw crossing a plastic vent in two. The three-claw lights are visually connected by a glossy black plastic strip. The rear features a prominent bumper. Note also the very distinctive design of the 20-inch wheels.

The interior remains consistent with that of the 308, as the new 408 adopts the same dashboard. Digital instrumentation with a 3D effect, a 10-inch center screen, and i-toggles are all retained. The aluminum arch on the lower part of the central console is also kept. The 2.79-meter wheelbase provides a spacious rear seating area. The trunk capacity increases to 536 liters, or up to 1,611 liters with the rear seats folded down.

A future electric 408

The engine lineup includes 2 plug-in hybrid options hybrids of 180 and 225 horsepower. Both utilize a 12.4 kWh battery. Range and overall performance are currently under homologation.

Peugeot will also offer a 130-horsepower gasoline engine. Like the plug-in hybrids, it will feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. A manual transmission will not be available on this model.

No diesel engine will be part of the lineup. However, a fully electric 408 is planned for the near future.

The new 408 will be manufactured in France, at the Mulhouse factory. It is scheduled to launch in early 2023. Prices, not yet announced, are expected to be slightly higher than those of the 308.

Peugeot also plans to sell the 408 in China. Vehicles sold on this market will be assembled locally, at the Chengdu plant.
