New BMW XM: An Extremely Beastly Hybrid!

Symbol of a new era, the high-performance BMW XM SUV is also the first “M” model with an electrified engine. There will be some sportiness.

This is a model that will generate a lot of buzz. Starting with its ultra-masculine style. Munich-based company now presents a new visual identity that it applies across its entire lineup. While the large double kidney grille may seem oversized on a BMW i4 or on an i7, it’s clear that this BMW XM wears it quite well.

Primarily aimed at the US and Middle Eastern markets due to its XXL dimensions (5.11 meters long and 2 meters wide), it stands out with a certainly massive style, yet still streamlined when viewed from the side. The treatment of the waistline is quite original, as is the sleek design of the headlights and taillights. The widened fenders and “muscular” side skirts will delight enthusiasts of customization, as will the four vertical exhaust outlets.

BMW XM, a High-Tech SUV

With a more conventional appearance, the interior is nonetheless outstanding, close to the electric BMW iX. First and foremost, thanks to a double digital display. The first is a 12.3-inch screen for instrumentation, and the second measures 14.9 inches for multimedia/GPS.

Among the model’s features, you will notice an enhanced voice command system and a state-of-the-art augmented reality head-up display. But that’s not all. The BMW XM also features a 5G chip, and compatible Apple smartphone users will be able to unlock the doors without a traditional transponder.

Other refinements include a new “vintage” type of leather for the dashboard, as well as a four-zone climate control system. There are options between two premium audio setups (Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins), and an original system called IconicSounds Electric, developed with composer Hans Zimmer, aimed at enhancing acceleration sounds in electric mode.

Heavy Artillery: Combustion and Electric

At Mobiwisy, we’re used to writing about gentle mobility. But faced with such a high level of hybrid technology, how can we remain speechless. Under its long hood, the BMW XM packs a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, combined with a 197 hp electric motor and a generous battery for a hybrid, with a capacity of 25.7 kWh (net value). This unprecedented combination at BMW Motorsport allows the XM (not to be confused with the legendary Citroën XM) to deliver a colossal 748 hp and an enormous torque of 1,000 Nm.

In urban use, the BMW XM could travel up to 88 kilometers (WLTP) without using a drop of fuel. On the highway, the electric-only propulsion allows this 2,785 kg behemoth to reach 140 km/h. For charging, the standard cable can handle 7.4 kW and fully recharge the battery in 4.5 hours.

However, this BMW XM will not be ordered solely for showing off in upscale neighborhoods. Its DNA is rooted in sportiness. According to BMW, the plug-in hybrid SUV is capable of reaching 270 km/h (M driver package) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.

Its combined fuel consumption is rated at 1.5 l/100 km, but of course, this only applies to hybrid operation with a full battery. Actual real-world consumption is expected to be much higher. Electric consumption should range between 28.9 and 30.1 kWh/100 km.

All-Season Safety at an Unjustified Price for the BMW XM

To handle this power surge, the BMW XM benefits from a configurable all-wheel-drive system depending on weather conditions. It also features a limited-slip differential, active suspension, and anti-roll system.

Full of technology, high-performing, and fairly environmentally friendly on paper, the BMW XM is already available for order at a starting price of €175,000. This price is exempt from tax penalty thanks to CO₂ emissions set at 33 g/km, but no bonus. While not entirely politically correct, this first electrified model from BMW Motorsport division makes us drool. Fingers crossed for a future test drive. Deliveries won’t start before Spring 2023, with production beginning shortly before, in December 2022, at Spartanburg in the USA.
