Mercedes-Maybach Plug-in Hybrid: a limousine more discreet than a Twingo?

Maybach, Mercedes’ luxury division, is about to launch an S 580 e limousine with a very modest appetite thanks to its highly advanced plug-in hybrid system.

Founded in 1909 and revived by Daimler in 2002, the Maybach brand is Mercedes’ answer to Bentley and Rolls Royce in the ultra-luxury sector.

Since 2015, Maybach has been enhancing the Mercedes S-Class by equipping them with richer features and furnishing the interior with even more noble materials. Currently, only one model is available in France: a Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4Matic with mild hybrid 48-Volt system. Its price is set at €200,950, plus an additional super bonus of €50,000!

Even if your bank account allows you to afford a high-end vehicle, it is obviously unacceptable to pay such a bonus, especially since a 20% VAT is already due… Luckily, a plug-in hybrid version is in the starting blocks and should allow exemption from the bonus. Paradoxical, isn’t it?

Power and sobriety

More seriously, the new S 580 e version features all the mechanical solutions tested on the Mercedes S 580 e, including a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, with a combined power of up to 510 hp!

According to Mercedes-Maybach, the large 28 kWh battery allows for a theoretical range of 100 km in 100% electric mode. For charging, this more eco-friendly Maybach is equipped with an 11 kW charger but can also be connected via a 60 kW DC fast charger, which would enable the battery to be fully charged in 30 minutes.

“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we combine Maybach’s typical luxury experience with emission-free local driving in electric mode,” explains Daniel Lescow, Mercedes-Maybach Manager.

The final price remains to be confirmed but is expected to reach new heights!
