The new Ford Transit plug-in hybrid packs a punch

Halfway between a utility vehicle and a minivan, the Ford Transit Custom receives a plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Ford Kuga PHEV.
We mentioned the new generation Ford Transit Custom a few months ago. This latest model now offers a more environmentally friendly range with the choice between a fully electric powertrain and a plug-in hybrid. It confirms the manufacturer’s intention to offer a wide array of engines (gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, E85, and electric) on its models for both private and professional use.
If you choose electric, you will have the option between two electric motors of 100 kW (135 hp) or 160 kW (217 hp). For range (around 380 km according to Ford), a 74 kWh battery is used, assisted by a steam injection heat pump that reduces the consumption of heating and air conditioning. Charging can reach up to 125 kW of DC current, taking about 41 minutes to go from 15% to 80% capacity.
Sufficient Range?

The second new feature is called PHEV plug-in hybrid and adopts the proven mechanical setup from the Ford Kuga PHEV. It still produces 225 hp, with a modest torque value of 200 Nm. The 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with Atkinson cycle is combined here with an electric motor and a high-capacity 11.8 kWh (net) battery. According to Ford, the Transit Custom PHEV can reach a range of 57 km. Thanks to V2L technology, it can also charge various electrical and electronic devices with a charging power of 2.3 kW. Ford also states that an all-wheel-drive version will be available.
The release date has not yet been set, but it is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2023.
