How much will the burned vehicles during the riots cost?

Since Nahel’s death on June 27, nights of riots have been accumulating all over France. Many vehicles are set on fire by the rioters, but how much does a bus or tramway cost? 

For three nights, protesters and rioters have been gathering to confront law enforcement, but also to set fire to buses, trams, and police vehicles. 

What is the cost of a bus or a tramway? 

On average, a bus sells for between 220,000 and 550,000 euros depending on the vehicle’s length. If it is an “accordion” bus, the vehicle will be more expensive than a standard bus. Regarding the tramway, the price skyrockets. You should expect to pay between 2 to 3 million euros for a tram set with 160 to 280 seats. 

How much will the damages cost? 

In Clamart, the line 6 tramway was set on fire with Molotov cocktails late in the evening. 

Last night, the bus depot in Aubervilliers was targeted by rioters. They set fire to a total of 12 buses, which could cost up to 6,600,000 euros. It is unknown whether these are single or double-decker buses. 

Until Thursday, a total of 11 buses have been burned across Île-de-France, further increasing the overall cost. Damages could amount to approximately 12 million euros just for the burned buses in the Paris region.  

Bus and tramway lines closed from 9 p.m. in Île-de-France

Last night, bus and tramway services were shut down from 9 p.m., an announcement made by Valérie Pécresse, President of the Île-de-France Region. She stated on her Twitter account that this “decision was made in consultation with the police prefecture and regional transport operators.”

It remains to be seen whether this restriction will be extended in the coming days.
