MG and its new hybrid, more electric than thermal

The family hybrid SUV MG EHS returns in a new version that highlights the electric fairy.

The new MG EHS features a new rechargeable hybrid powertrain that combines an internal combustion engine designed for a hybrid association, a generator, a powerful electric motor, and a high-capacity battery. With a combined power output of 339 hp (249kW) when all the powertrain elements are engaged, it allows for a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 6.9 seconds. The strong link in this chain is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 142 hp (105 kW). It is paired with an electric motor that delivers 184 hp (135kW). The figures do not go unnoticed; the electric power exceeds that of the purely thermal one. Does this mean that the gasoline engine becomes a supporting element for the electric motor? That’s far from absurd!

The large 21.4 kWh battery, complemented by a high-efficiency 110 kW generator, offers an electric range of over 100 km in the WLTP cycle. It is known that this cycle favors urban driving or small secondary roads, so we can consider that in daily use, this range is realistic.

How do you use your car?

If you use your car every day to drop the kids off at school, go to work, do some shopping, or visit friends, how many times a year do you drive more than 100 km in a day? A small charge every night on your wall box and you’re good to go at a very low cost. The 100% electric mode can therefore become your primary mode of use with this car!

And for long trips, a quick fill-up of 55 liters of gasoline, and you’re off without worries thanks to a total range that can reach 1,000 km combined. It is not unreasonable to consider that this is an everyday electric car that can transform into a long-distance vehicle thanks to its secondary thermal engine.
