New BMW M5 Touring, the Furious Family Car

BMW lifts the veil on its new M5 Touring. A beast as spacious as it is fierce, and for the first time, hybrid.

But what is BMW up to? Nowadays, when talking about a new version of an icon, a manufacturer typically starts by outlining its history, highlighting how effortlessly it has traversed cultures and eras. It’s customary to remind everyone that it retains all the DNA that made its predecessors successful, even if, objectively, it has nothing in common with them aside from the name. Then comes a little spiel about new technologies and safety, always welcome to reassure buyers and demonstrate the attention paid to their health and that of other passengers. Finally, the richness of the equipment is praised, including the dozens of speakers essential for listening to France Inter, the ultra-connected multimedia screen, and the ambient lighting that transforms the cabin into a living space. And if the leather is vegan and the plastic recycled, that’s even better. Finally, we get to talk about the engine. Well, BMW has just kicked the hornet’s nest by presenting its new sporty family car, the M5 Touring, starting with the power of 727 hp (535 kW) and a truck-like torque of 1,000 Nm! Additionally, it’s an ultra-spacious wagon and the engine is hybrid with a 4.4-liter V8 that alone develops 585 hp (430 kW)… When least expected, what a delightful surprise!

A plug-in hybrid BMW therefore partially electric

In full electric mode, the car can reach a speed of 140 km/h, and its 18.6 kWh battery offers a range of 67 kilometers in WLTP cycle. Enough to drive daily without emissions and recharge in the evening up to 11 kW, before enjoying winding country roads on the weekend thanks to the M xDrive all-wheel-drive with an active differential.

This third generation is designed to be easy to use daily, capable of covering long distances while traversing urban areas without local emissions, but it especially offers stunning performance. Thanks to its all-new M Hybrid propulsion system, the BMW M5 Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and boasts responses worthy of a true sports car. It is undeniably just that despite its generous dimensions, five true seats, and spacious trunk. Its specific design integrates flared wheel arches paired with oversized side skirts, monstrous air intakes around the new illuminated BMW M grille, and a dual-section diffuser hosting a pair of circular exhausts each. It’s beautiful and beastly. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h but can be raised to 305 km/h thanks to the optional M Experience Package.

The new BMW M5 Touring will be available for order in September starting at 162,050 euros and avoids any penalties thanks to CO₂ emissions (WLTP cycle) limited to 39 – 46 g/km. Enjoyable and practical hybrid, according to the brand with the propeller.
