New MG EHS, the best of hybrids at an affordable price

MG EHS

Larger, more modern, and especially boasting more 100% electric range, the MG EHS takes a step forward.

Launched three years ago in the European market, the Anglo-Chinese EHS SUV has been less successful than its electric cousins. This is due to an already mature market for plug-in hybrid drivetrains in Europe. A facelift in 2023 allowed it to continue its career, but it was time to make way for a truly new model. Whether by luck or carefully planned timing, probably a bit of both, hybrids are once again in vogue while the frenzy around 100% electric models is decreasing.

The new plug-in hybrid EHS receives a larger battery of 21.4 kWh compared to 16.6 kWh for the previous model. This allows it to double its current electric range to reach 103 km on the WLTP cycle. Furthermore, the new powertrain, which combines an electric motor with a 1.5 Turbo 4-cylinder combustion engine, announces a combined power of 326 hp. A sign of the evolution of electrification, the electric block is now more powerful at 184 hp than the internal combustion unit, which only delivers 142.

The “always more” according to MG

But the biggest change is, of course, aesthetic. The MG hybrid gains 45 mm in length and 14 mm in width, but is 45 mm lower. Such evolutions are a step in the right direction in terms of habitability and road comfort. With a length of 4,670 mm and a wheelbase of 2,765 mm, passengers will be delighted. The design brings it closer to the highly successful Marvel R. The lighting signature moves away from that of the early Chinese MGs to be more aligned with what can be seen on its little hybrid sister, the MG3.

If the proportions seem very balanced, the question remains about the pricing that must also be just as balanced. The previous generation EHS is currently listed starting at 30,490 euros with a significant boost of 5,000 euros from the manufacturer. The initial prices announced in the British market remain stable, and the same is expected for France. At 35,000 euros, let’s admit it will become difficult to find faults.
