Opel Frontera Price: Parity Between Electric and Gasoline, What to Choose?

Opel plays the aggressive card with a long-term rental offer for €189/month for both electric and petrol versions.

It is always somewhat of a “risky” exercise to compare things that are not comparable. The trap set by Opel is therefore one of price parity for its new urban SUV, the Frontera. The commercial pitch promises €189 per month in both cases, but you obviously need to check the asterisks to untangle the subtleties.

Let’s start with the thermal petrol version referred to as Hybrid. It is actually just a micro-hybrid version with very slight electric assistance during starts. That’s still a plus to keep consumption low during the most energy-consuming phase of driving. The offer states:

  • 1st payment of €5500
  • 36 months and 30,000 kilometers
  • thus 35 months at €189 in addition to the €5500 payment
  • assistance and guarantees included for 3 years

We are talking about the base Edition version sold for €24,500 with no options. The transmission is automatic and the power is limited to 100 horsepower. In the end, the long-term rental (LLD) will cost €12,115, which is very reasonable.

In addition to this, you will need to add an eco penalty of €150 in 2024 (what about in 2025?) due to CO2 emissions of 122g per kilometer. As for fuel consumption, officially 5.3 liters per 100 km, but which can realistically be estimated at 6.5 liters (at €1.85 per liter), it will cost you approximately €3,610 to cover the allowable 30,000 km.

Ultimately, the 3 years of rental will cost around €15,875. Now let’s move on to the electric version.

Opel Frontera
Not much under the hood but an interesting price.

The power of electric?

Same finish and same equipment for the electric version, with the only difference being that the power increases to 112 horsepower due to the additional weight from the battery. The catalog sale price is €29,000, from which one can subtract €4,000 in 2024 due to the ecological bonus. This brings the Opel Frontera electric price down to €25,000. And this is where things get complicated.

In order to reach its price of €189/month, Opel relies on your eligibility for the maximum bonus of €7,000… which is a possibility. If that’s the case, here are the conditions for the LLD:

  • 1st payment of €2,000 after the €7,000 bonus deduction
  • 36 months and 30,000 kilometers
  • thus 35 months at €189 in addition to the €2,000 payment
  • assistance and guarantees included for 3 years

No eco penalty here, so the required price is indeed the real one, amounting to €8,615. That is €3,500 less than its thermal counterpart. But if you are not eligible for the €7,000 super bonus, then the first payment will rise to €5,000. This still remains €500 less than the petrol version.

Assuming a real consumption of 14 kWh per 100 km (at €0.23 per kWh), then covering the 30,000 kilometers will cost €966 with the Frontera.

In the end, under the most pessimistic assumption, the electric version will cost you €12,581 over 3 years. In the best case, with the €7,000 bonus, then €9,581. This is between €3,294 and €6,294 less than the thermal version, or in other words, between -21% and -40% cheaper!

The choice is therefore quite clear…
