67 Years Ago, the Mini Was Born: The Small Car That Would Revolutionize the Automobile Industry

On August 26, 1959, the British Motor Corporation unveiled the Mini. Small on the outside, surprisingly spacious on the inside, Alec Issigonis’s creation would become one of the most famous cars in history.

It is hard to imagine that a car just three meters long could shake up an entire industry. Yet, that is what begins on August 26, 1959, when the British Motor Corporation (BMC) simultaneously presents two nearly identical small cars: the Morris Mini-Minor and the Austin Seven. Two names for what the whole world would simply come to call the Mini.

Its history has its roots in the Suez crisis and fuel supply difficulties that led BMC to envision a particularly economical car. Engineer Alec Issigonis is given an ambitious mission: to provide four genuine seats within minimal dimensions, without sacrificing road behavior or making the car too expensive.

His response is brilliant. The four-cylinder engine is installed transversely at the front, the Mini adopts front-wheel drive, and its small wheels are pushed to the corners. An architecture that allows for maximum space for occupants and profoundly influences the design of modern small cars.

The Mini Becomes a British Icon

Sold for £496 in the UK, the Mini gradually appeals well beyond its role as a small economic car. Movie stars, celebrities, and musicians adopt it. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Peter Sellers, and David Bowie will all contribute to its image as a cultural phenomenon.

In 1961, the Mini Cooper arrives, followed by the Cooper S. Victories at the Monte Carlo Rally, including Paddy Hopkirk’s win in 1964, further transform the small British car into a legend.

The classic Mini will remain in production until October 4, 2000. In 41 years, more than 5.3 million units will have been made.

BMW will give it a second life with the modern MINI launched in 2001. Now electric, connected, and significantly larger, it still retains some principles envisioned by Issigonis.
