Volkswagen Tayron

Luxury is great, but versatility will always be able to attract a wider clientele. Such is the ambition of the Tayron.

Situated in the Volkswagen lineup between the exclusive Touareg and the popular Tiguan, the new Tayron therefore plays the versatility card with 7 seats, optimized space, and a very wide range of engines.

The interior volume of the new German SUV sets new standards for the segment with a generous luggage compartment capacity of up to 885 liters with five passengers on board. Huge for a vehicle 4,770 mm long. The wheels of up to 20 inches are separated by a wheelbase of 2,791 mm. The Tayron is thus the second largest SUV of the brand in Europe, between the Tiguan (4,539 mm) and the Touareg (4,902 mm). The Tayron measures 1,660 mm in height and 1,852 mm in width, excluding exterior mirrors. The only downside, pending the announcement of its prices, is that we cannot honestly call it a very beautiful car. The shapes of the vehicle are resolutely designed for interior space with austere square volumes, and the German manufacturer has not neglected efficiency with an aerodynamic drag coefficient of a respectable 0.28. But on the positive side, the Tayron is a vehicle suitable for towing with a maximum towing capacity of up to 2.5 tons, ideal for transporting horses, classic cars, boats, or large caravans for vacations.

Volkswagen offers the new Tayron with two plug-in hybrid powertrains, a mild hybrid powertrain, two turbo petrol engines, and two turbo diesel engines. The power range extends from 110 kW (150 hp) to 200 kW (272 hp). The two turbo petrol engines and the most powerful turbo diesel are paired with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, while all other versions are front-wheel drive. All versions of the Tayron feature a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The two plug-in hybrid powertrains are, in our view, the most interesting, as they allow for significant electric range for daily use, temporarily transforming the Tayron into an electric car. The combination of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor delivers a total power of 150 kW (204 hp) in the base version and 200 kW (272 hp) in the high-end version. Thanks to the 19.7 kWh battery, Volkswagen promises an electric range of over 100 km, perfect for living day-to-day in 100% electric mode while benefiting from a total range of 850 km with the internal combustion engine. The battery can be charged at urban or home stations up to 11 kW as well as at fast charging stations up to 50 kW.

Four trims will be available at the launch in France: Life Plus, VW Edition, R-Line, and R-Line Exclusive. The luxurious Elegance trim will arrive later.
