Mercedes launches a luxury robotaxi based on the S-Class

Mercedes partners with Momenta and Lumo to develop a Level 4 autonomous robotaxi service based on the S-Class.

Mercedes announces a strategic partnership with Momenta and mobility provider Lumo to offer a high-end robotaxi service based on the new S-Class. The goal is to combine the brand’s expertise in comfort and safety with Level 4 (SAE) autonomous driving technologies, in a commercial operating framework.

The launch is initially planned for Abu Dhabi, where Lumo, a K2 subsidiary, will operate the fleet. This initial phase aims to validate the system’s performance in real-world conditions and collect essential data for future expansions of the service into other markets.

The autonomous luxury

The technological foundation of this robotaxi is based on the new MB.OS embedded operating system, which coordinates automated driving functions, data management, and passenger interface. This software is integrated into the electronic architecture of the S-Class and relies on a combination of advanced sensors, including LiDAR, radars, and cameras, to ensure a precise perception of the environment.

This project is part of a broader strategy of Mercedes-Benz around autonomous driving. The manufacturer is simultaneously developing other Level 4 programs, some aimed at private use and others at professional applications. Collaborations are also underway with Nvidia, particularly around the Drive AV platform, with the aim of accelerating the development of automated driving software.
