Tesla FSD in Europe: a revolution under close surveillance

The Dutch authority grants Tesla the very first European type approval for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system.

A rigorous approval, not a “copy-paste”

Unlike the United States, where self-certification prevails, Europe imposes a strict pre-approval framework. The green light from the RDW follows 18 months of intensive testing, covering more than 1.6 million kilometers on EU roads. The RDW is unequivocal: the software versions and features are not directly comparable to the US system.

A strategic issue for Tesla

This European expansion is crucial for Tesla. Elon Musk must achieve the colossal target of 10 million FSD subscribers to validate his 2025 compensation plan. With one million subscribers recorded by the end of 2025, opening the European market is an essential lever.

Although currently limited to the Netherlands, Tesla anticipates an extension to the entire European Union (France, Germany, etc.) by summer 2026, thanks to the principle of mutual recognition. A major step that remains subject to the final votes of regulators.
