Should a Tesla really drive for us?
The autonomous Tesla is coming, but for now, the most advanced driving aids remain valuable allies for road safety.
The question may seem provocative, but listening to Elon Musk for the past ten years, the answer would already seem obvious for Tesla. The fully autonomous car would be imminent, ready to turn every driver into a mere passenger. However, reality is more nuanced. And ultimately, this might not be a problem.
The recent name change of Tesla’s system in China speaks volumes. Gone is the famous “Full Self-Driving” : in comes “Tesla Assisted Driving,” in other words, a driving aid. A more honest, more realistic name as well. Because despite impressive progress, current Teslas remain level 2 vehicles: the driver must keep their hands on the wheel and remain responsible at all times.
Little by little, we grow
Should we see it as a failure? On the contrary. Autonomous driving will one day be a reality. Advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, and infrastructure make this evolution almost inevitable. In twenty years, it is likely that allowing a human to manage a car alone will seem as archaic as driving without ABS today.
But while we wait for the technology to reach absolute reliability — in all conditions and on all roads — we must accept an intermediate phase. And this transition involves increasingly effective driving aids.
Lane keeping, emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control: these systems are already saving lives. Tesla takes this logic further with highly advanced, sometimes spectacular assistance, but it must be understood as an aid, not as an invisible chauffeur.

The danger is thus not in driving assistance. The danger would be to promise total autonomy too soon. In terms of road safety, transparency is better than marketing. And if a Tesla is really helping to drive better today, that’s already excellent news.
